Duncan Stepto – Mud Cracking Years

Published by Beyond The Vale Publishing

Published date – September 2022

“Drought and its effects have been an integral part of my working life.”

This collection of poetry and prose from debut author, Duncan Stepto, is heavily influenced by his life as a groundwater geologist/geophysicist and his interest in all aspects of the natural world. Duncan’s writing reflects the dry, dusty and drought-stricken parts of Southern Africa. At times of loss, humour and the better traits of humanity are always present.

Join Duncan as he reflects on his experience drawn from travels around post-colonial East Africa, from his upbringing in Zambia and Rhodesia, to South Africa, Namibia and Angola, pausing to take an interlude in Israel.

The volume ends on a positive, though questioning note.

Duncan has been scribbling verses since his teens where his studies and profession permitted it. In addition to travelling through Southern and Eastern Africa, He has travelled widely on archaeological and history tours to China and Southeast Asia, Ethiopia, Latin America and Easter Island, and the Baltic States.

About the author

Duncan has been scribbling verses since his teens, albeit intermittently as studies and profession permitted. Only once he joined Writers2000, a writing group in Johannesburg, did enthusiasm for the genre take concrete form.

Coloured by his profession, a groundwater geologist/geophysicist, his writing often reflects the dry, dusty, and drought-stricken parts of Southern Africa. It also fostered his interest in all aspects of the natural world.

Brought up in Zambia and Rhodesia, (Zimbabwe), he wandered East Africa and saw the bitter fruits of freedom in the post-colonial period.

He has travelled widely on archaeological and history tours to China and Southeast Asia, Ethiopia, Latin America and Easter Island, the Baltic States.

Other interests are varied ranging from canoeing and hiking to opera and Shakespeare.
