In the 1970s, young South African men were conscripted into military service.

From 1975, the South African Defence Force (SADF) became involved in the Border War in Angola, supporting the anti-communist forces against the communist-backed Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

Many young soldiers were deployed into Angola, facing harsh jungle terrain, guerrilla warfare, and the reality of fighting against well-organized and determined enemies. Angola was difficult and dangerous terrain, where soldiers had to navigate dense forests, swamps, and unpredictable weather.

This is the story of one of those men. Dennis Davey. From his basic service at 8SAI Upington through to service in Angola and beyond into civilian life.

Full of pictures and anecdotes from both military and civilian life.
