Dr Mkhize is a mathematics teacher with a Secondary Teacher’s Diploma, BSc (Mathematics & Applied Mathematics), MS (Mathematics), BSc Hons (Psychology) and a PhD (Mathematics Education). Her passion for change in mathematics learning for the country stems from her brutal experiences as a mathematics student during the peak of apartheid in schools and the University of Zululand. The continued suppression of mathematical talent for millions of children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds has motivated her to write this book.
“The roots of this book are about fear of judgement and the yearning to make a difference in our schools, especially rural and township schools.”
This book is based on both empirical and theoretical research. More than ten years of extensive mathematical engagements with grade 12 adolescents have proved the scientific evidence discovered at the turn of the century that adolescents are endowed with prowess amenable to productive mathematics learning. There are active enablers, not factors, that are behind the continued past legacy of poor mathematics participation in schools.
