Book Fair – Author Profile – Kim Schreuder Horn

What inspired you to first start writing?

I have always enjoyed writing even from a young age. As a lawyer, a large part of what I do entails writing … but legal writing.

Tell us a little about both your books – The Mole and The Sparrow and The Mole and New Beginnings –

What are they about?

Both books are children’s short rhyming stories, that tell a story of discovery and learning by the main character, the Mole. Each book also holds an important underlying message that will help young children navigate the wonders of life too.

In my first book, The Mole and the Sparrow, the underlying message is that we should act with kindness in even the most difficult of times, and in the second book, The Mole and New Beginnings, the important message is that a positive attitude and courage helps us to embrace change.

Where did the idea come from?

In 2004, I started writing stories about a whimsical and inquisitive mole but then filed these stories in a file in my office and completely forgot about them. It was only in 2020, during a routine office-clearing of bundles of documents, that I came across these writings again and re-discovered this delightful mole character, and also the joy for children’s creative -writing once again.

Do you have a favourite time/place to write?

In front of my computer (I know that is so boring, but it is where my creative juices flow).

Do you have any plans for your next book?

Yes, and I can’t wait to start the processes…

What’s your favourite book to read (or genre or author)?

I have always loved reading, and have a wide range of genre’s that I enjoy. To this day, I gravitate towards the Classics, as I enjoy the different language, style and prose.  I do enjoy John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, Jane Austen, The Bronte’s, Margaret Craven, Charles Dickens. Personally, two of my favourite books: Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, and To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, may well have subconsciously steered me into the direction of Law.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I have full time jobs of being a mother to two wonderful teenage girls, wife and Principal Attorney of the law Firm that I established over 20 years ago.
